Gathering Signatures: Quick Start Guide
State-wide Signature Petition Drive Begins: Please Get Involved Now
The reason for the launch of the signature drive now is that the Texas Secretary of State on March 13, 2012 informed the Justice Party of Texas that the recent Federal Redistricting Court decision set the date of March 14, 2012 as the date when the party could begin gathering signatures to get Rocky Anderson and the Justice Party on theTexas ballot .
Goals of Signature Petition Drive:
To gain recognition of the Justice Party as an official political party in Texas
- To place our candidates, especially Rocky Anderson, who is the Justice Party Nominee for President of the United States, on the Texas Ballot in the November 6, 2012 Election.
Petition Drive Highlights
Petition Drive lasts from March 14th to June 29th
The required number of Ssgnatures is 49,799 signatures
- Our Target is 100,000 signatures to compensate for possible mistakes, technical rejections by the Secretary of State of individual signatures, and challenges from other parties to some of the signatures because they don’t want the competition.
- We will gather signatures up to and including the last day of the Petition Drive.
Primary Obstacle to Success:: WE MUST COMPLY WITH THIS REQUIREMENT
Texas law says that only the signatures of voters who have not voted in any other party’ primary, run-off election, or convention can count toward the required number of signatures.
Note: The Justice Party of Texas believes that this requirement is a violation of the voters’ right to promote additional choices on the ballot, regardless of which party primary they choose to participate at a later time. Also, even if a voter has participated in another party’s primary election or convention, they are not bound by their votes in the Primary election if they change their minds and prefer another party’s candidate when they vote by secret ballot in the November Election. The Justice Patty is exploring possible legal remedies for challenging this law that restricts the voter’s right to promote the creation of a new political party and its candidates who will give the voter additional choices for them to vote for should they choose to do so. In the meantime, we must follow the law.
Reasons why Voters should sign our Petition
Voters get an additional choice to vote for in the November 3012 Election and in uture elections.
- The Justice Party has a great candidate for President, Rocky Anderson. Voters will not have the option of voting for Rocky Anderson unless they sign our Petition.
1. Download the petition to your computer:
2. Print or make multiple copies of the petittion.
The paper size for the Petition is the annoying Legal Size, which means that you have to be able to load and print Legal size paper in your printer. If you printer does not have a Legal size paper tray, it may still print the Petition if the printer has a manual feed option. Otherwise, you will have to do like I am going to do, save it to USB memory card (thumb drive) and take it to a copy shop or office supply store that provides copying services.
It is extremely important that the print quality of the Petittion be high. The voters must be able to read everything on the Petition. Most offices have large printers with Legal paper trays The problem with using office printers is that almost all companies have policies against using their printers for your own personal (political) use.
Tip: Before printing the Petition, be sure and select the Page Orientation mode of "Landscape" not "Portraint". The Instruction page is configured for "Portrait" mode. Your printer may be smart enough to figure out the page orientation mode automatically.
3. Follow the instructions on the Form.
Note The Petition must contain either EITHER the voter's date of birth or his or her Voter Registration ID (VUID) (number. If voters have their Voter Registration Card with them, enter the VUID number as it makes it easier for the Secretary of State to verify that the signatures are correct after we trun the petitions into the Secretary of State's office.
4. Register with this Website as Volunteer Signature Collector.
Go here to register as a Volunteer Signature Collector.. By registering, you help us identify which areas of Texas are being covered by our signature collection effort and which areas we need to recruit more Volunteer Signature Collectors.
5. Start Gathering Signatures
You can help the voter fill out the Petition, but the voter's signature must be in the voter's handwriting. Petition circulators should check to make sure that all required informaton is on the petition.
6. Return here to check for updates.
A plan for gathering and processing the signatures will be published here tomorrow. If you have questions regarding the petition process, enter them in the Comment section that follows this article.
